Chicago is a city in Unites States that I dream not only to visit but live. Chicago has great schools and programs to apply to.

Also there are all different kinds of museums to visit and many opera theaters to enjoy. There are a lot of cultures all together in one city. It is very cool for me to know other cultures and traditions.

In my opinion, I will really enjoy living in Chicago because of the windy and cool weather. It’s another important important characteristic that made me love that city.

I am going there someday for sure and have a great experience.

The Culture Shock

Distinguished traditional customs form the country culture. The culture here in United States is unique. This is a country where people called it freedom land.

The biggest culture shock which I found here is that people can return their bought merchandises easily. If we don’t like the stuff which we purchased a few days ago, we only need to take it back to the shop , and the shop workers would help us. In this kind of ways that they are doing business can not only protect the consumers profit, but also enable the company to improve their goods.

Different Cultures

When I first came to LA, I felt several culture shocks. Everything seemed different at first but the biggest cultural difference were the size and way that people talk to each other.

First of all, I was surprised that everything in here is big. Not only the size of the buildings but also the size of foods were extremely large. For example, I was shocked after I ordered small size Coke. It didn’t look like a small size but medium or large size of the ones we have in Korea. Also, foods like hamburgers or pizzas are also very big that I cannot eat the whole meal.

Secondly, I felt cultural difference in language when I talked to older people. In South Korea, there are polite words and if you talk to older people, you should use them. But in here, there are no such words. Thus, at first it’s been hard for me to call my teacher by her name or an older student again by his name.

However, after several weeks, I felt like I adopted to this culture more and more. So, now I can eat my whole lunch without a problem and also I can call my teachers by their names.

New Year’s Eve in Switzerland

SWITIn Switzerland, we don’t have a special tradition to celebrate New Year.

Some people who like to be close to Alps, rent a cabin up to the snowy mountains and admire the fireworks from there.

Some like to go out with friends and party all night.

Some just enjoy a family meal.

Lots of people from other countries are living in Switzerland so there are a lot more traditional celebrations.

This is actually what I like the most about New Year’s Eve in Switzerland; even if people doesn’t celebrate the New Year in the same way; they all respect each other and enter the New Year all together.

KosolIn my country we celebrate the New Year like the American people do.

We begin to gather in the center of the city about 6PM and wait until the next year comes by. The countdown is fun.

There is always a lot of activities and free amenities like concerts, parties and so on.

Everyone who attends these events takes a lot of pictures and makes new friends. The exotic Thai smile warms the New Year’s Eve.

She has taught me to improve my writing skills. She makes us practice a lot. When I first started writing I would just fill my writing journal with large capital letters. First, Ms. Staci taught me how to write a simple sentence. It was a very important lesson. Now, I can write short stories. Ms. Staci gave me confidence so that I can achieve my goals in writing a full essay when I go to Level 5.

clip_image002        My favorite hobby is playing the guitar. I like the guitar because you can have a great time with this instrument. One of the things I like to do is take my guitar to a party. It gives me chance to show off my guitar skills. It also makes a party fun and a little different. I like to see people smile when I play my guitar. Another reason why I like the guitar is that I learn about my life, for example when I’m feeling sad or blue. I play happy songs and some sad songs but I feel better after I played.

Tom from BelgiumWith no hesitation, what I miss most is my closest friends and relatives. I was dreaming about the U.S. because I thought it would be very easy and very interesting but I didn’t expect the fact that I would have to begin my life at the very start..No friends, no mates..I miss my ‘little’ everyday life which used to make me much happier than the one I’m living now. I miss Belgian food, habits, parties!..but its because I’m abroad and because I feel a little bit homesick. When I was in Belgium I dreamt about meeting new people, new cultures and learning new languages, so here I am.

I have visited U.S. several times before, so I would say I am very familiar with American Culture. In South Korea, my home country, we are influenced by Americans; we share similar ideas. American culture though I see ‘individualism’. Everyone has their strong opinion and doesn’t hesitate to express it. But in Korea, even though we have our own opinions, many people doesn’t want to speak out and follow their major opinion. As a Korean I was embarrassed by the characteristics and tried to escape from any kind of argument but I know that I can’t always run away. Therefore, these days, I try to catch up with the news and make my opinion about it.
